Task/Problem Overview
The Mass Maintenance module in Inventory Management allows you to manage both master and local inventory. An important function is the Import From Master feature. This allows you to search master inventory for items based on a number of different criteria, and bring them into local inventory so that they can be used. This document covers how the search logic works on this screen.
Search Logic

When you input search criteria that matches an item in master inventory, there is some logic that determines whether it is actually displayed in the search result. A comparison with local inventory takes place. This is to ensure that items that already exist in local inventory are not displayed, preventing you from importing the item a second time.

A comparison by UPC number takes place first. If there are any part numbers that exist in local inventory with the same UPC in master, then it will not be displayed. It does not matter if the manufacturer and part number are completely different. UPC numbers are intended to be unique in Savance Enterprise. It does not make much sense to have two part numbers with the same UPC because it is supposed to resolve to only one part number.

Comparison by the manufacturer and part number combination takes place next. If a part with the exact same manufacturer and part number exists in local inventory, then it will not be displayed in the search. A match would indicate that the part was already imported into local, so there is no reason to import it again.

If you would like to replace a part number already existing in local with a part number in master, you may find that it will not show up in the import from master search. This is because it matched one of the two criteria explained above. The best way to work around this would be to first retire the item in local inventory. This way, if you search for the part again, it will appear in your search results, and you will be able to re-import it. Keep in mind that the item history of the retired part will not carry over to the newly imported part.
